Why build the ark?!?

Last week I was telling a friend a story about someone that I know and we decided that this person should be known as Noah because they like animals.  Well one thing led to another and I found that I couldn’t stop thinking about the actual story of Noah.

For those of you who don’t know the story here it is short and sweet.  Humanity was bad, real bad and God was tired of all the badness.  But there was one man, Noah, who found favor in the Lord’s sight.  So God commissioned Noah to build an ark, collect 2 of every animal and then get the heck out of dodge.  The world then flooded and God promised using a rainbow as His sign that He would never flood the earth like that again.

Okay well back to my thinking… After Noah was brought up there was one thought that I couldn’t stop thinking about.  Why did God have Noah build the ark?  Now I get that the ark held Noah, his family and the animals so that they wouldn’t drown and thus we are alive today.  But think about this…. God is all powerful.  He could do anything and can do anything.  So with all that said, God could have easily and miraculously saved Noah, his family and the animals some other way.  And yet… He told Noah to build an ark.

“So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.16 Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20 Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”  22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” Genesis 6:13-22

Well in the past week I have thought about this many times.  And I realized that in a similar and yet different way the Lord often tells me to build my own ark.  It is God’s way of allowing me to be apart of what He is doing.  God could have done everything Himself but He ALLOWED for Noah to be apart of the salvation.  How incredible is that!  Even though humanity had sinned through Adam and Eve and even though the human race was wicked, the Lord allowed for a human to work along with Him.

And isn’t that what God is doing with me?  God is allowing me to love those whom He loves, God is allowing me to preach about His love, acceptance, forgiveness and salvation… God is working through me when He could do it all Himself.  It is such an honor to know that the God of the universe, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lord allows for me to work alongside Him for His glory.  Wow!

Sometimes God speaks and reveals Himself through the smallest conversations.  Sometimes He uses conversations that have nothing to do with Him to show us everything about who He is.  And sometimes He let’s us partner with Him to do amazing things!

Where in your own life is God asking you to build an ark?

Stop and think about why God is askig you to build an ark instead of doing the miraculous instead?
